Artists’ Statement
Most recently, I’ve been enjoying the challenge to make pouring vessels and pots which combine both slab and throwing techniques. This collection features a revival of the 18th century “costrel” which were originally created in the Southwest for portable drinking – perhaps likened to an early form of flask.
I mainly create thrown domestic-ware on the potters’ wheel preferring to make things that have some every-day use in our homes. I use a light buff coloured stoneware clay sourced from the clay-pits of Dartmoor.
My take on these is a gentle nod to the humble potters of the past. All of my work is made with stoneware sourced from the clay-pits of Devon and fired in the electric kiln at my studio in Totnes using 100% renewable energy.
The glazed surfaces are the result of a chemical reaction between the oxides at high temperature leading to gloop, gloss, crackle and radiant colours. My current collection features pots glazed in one of three unique and personal glazes devised through my own experimentation and knowledge of the materials.
These include: A red-brown glaze with rich tones that pool to a deep brown "tenmoku" oxide red-brown, a deep green Copper based glaze from a mix of reclaimed copper glazes and a Celadon green base glaze with hints of blue from blends with other rutile based glazes.
